Education Commission
The Education Commission

The Education Commission is a group of business leaders,
education professionals, and interested citizens who have ONE goal:
raising student achievement by improving all parts of Palm Beach
County's educational system and strengthening our collective
services from pre-school programs through post-secondary
education and job preparation activities.

The mission the commission is to serve as a springboard for
education reform, improved social and successful job preparation in
Palm Beach County. We provide our community leaders with a
neutral setting to meet, talk, and "to think outside the box" to find
solutions to educational problems.

Education Commission Meetings (8:00am)

Palm Beach County Council PTA/PTSA Representative : Mindy Haas
March 15,2007    Topic: The Education Network (TEN) Channel 19
April  19,2007      Topic: Gang Violence in Palm Beach County

A brief overview of the meeting on March 15, 2007 at the Channel 19
station the commission met at 8:00am. The Education Network
greeted the commission with an overview of the resources available
to the school district and the community, followed by a tour of the
facility. Our schools in Palm Beach are very fortunate to have such a
system set up for additional learning outside the traditional
classroom. There are approximately 465,000 viewers at this time.
As a PTA representative I felt we can use this Network to pass on the
messages of Parent Involvement in our schools, help promote
Business partners, and to do PTA PSA’s (Public service
Announcements). A brief overview of the meeting held on April 19,
2007 was at the Airport Hilton, hosted by Sherriff Rick Bradshaw. The
topic was gang violence in our community and in our schools. Did you
know that there are 6000 gang members in Palm Beach County? 13
nationally recognized gangs in our schools and another 24
nontraditional gangs, all walking the halls of our schools. Now I
understand there not in every school, but if they are not stopped they
will be there eventually. Talk to your children about gangs and they
can educate us better than we would think. In Palm Beach County
Schools we have a program that begins in 4th and 5th grade called
the Phoenix Project. This program educates our children in gang
violence.
Dear Friends-

Thank you for a lovely afternoon of fun and excitement for our children.  They really
enjoyed this opportunity that your advocacy energy created.  Thank you to my mom for
really saving the day- she created beautiful lunch and dessert platter for our guests.
Thank you to Susanna and Mary Ann- with all they were going through in their own
families- they came through. Some of you may not know Susanna had a fire in her
kitchen that morning and Mary Ann’s son has a serious injury.

Everyday as a parent is challenging and working with all of you makes each project
better than the previous.  We are definitely operate like a village -  helping each other
whenever we need it.  Thank you all again.

We are sorry that Tom Knoll (Florida PTA –Legislative Committee Rep.-PBC Council)
and Mindy Hass (PBC PTA President)- we missed you on this one- see you both soon.,
Hope you are feeling better soon.

The K-Kids will always remember Mrs. Marshall for all of her unending efforts to put
this group together and continuing to raise the bar for standards  and Mr. Anderson and
SISK (Singer Island Sunrise Kiwanis) for sponsoring and caring as he always does.
